FTP access to your web hosting — upload files

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the most widely used method for uploading files to a web hosting account — everything from website files and images to database backups. Here is how to get started.

Download an FTP program

We recommend FileZilla — it is free, secure and easy to use. Download it from filezilla-project.org. It works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

2

Find your FTP login details

You need three things: - Host name: The server address you received from us when the account was created - Username: Your FTP username - Password: Your FTP password - Port: 21 (FTP) or 22 (SFTP — recommended for an encrypted connection)

Can't find the details? Contact us and we will send them to you.

3

Connect

Open FileZilla. At the top of the window there are four fields: Host, Username, Password and Port. Fill them in and click Quickconnect. Once connected, you see your local files on the left and the web hosting files on the right.

4

Upload files

Find the file or folder on the left side (your computer). Double-click or drag it over to the right side (the web hosting). The file is uploaded automatically. Website files usually belong in the public_html or httpdocs folder — it depends on your hosting type.

5

SFTP instead of FTP

We recommend using SFTP (port 22) rather than FTP (port 21) if available. SFTP encrypts the connection, so your login details and files cannot be intercepted along the way. In FileZilla you simply select "SFTP" under connection type.

Tip from us

Avoid editing files directly on the web hosting — always take a copy first. Need to restore an older version? We have automatic backups, so contact us if something goes wrong.

We review our guides at least every six months to make sure the content is up to date. If you spot anything outdated or missing, please write to us — we would love to hear from you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is FTP used for on a web hosting account?+
FTP (or secure SFTP) is used to upload and download files on the web hosting — e.g. website files, images and backups — without going through a control panel.
Is FTP secure?+
Plain FTP sends the username and password in clear text and should be avoided. Use SFTP or FTPS, which encrypt the connection. The vast majority of web hosting providers support it today.
Which program is recommended for FTP?+
FileZilla is free and works on both Windows and Mac. WinSCP is a good alternative on Windows. Both support SFTP.
What do I do if the FTP connection is refused?+
Check that the host name, port (22 for SFTP, 21 for FTP) and username are correct, that the password has not expired, and that your IP has not been blocked by the hosting firewall after too many failed attempts.
